• El Tangauta Nº 200 (JUN 2011) • © El Tangauta 2011 •
Gracias | Thanks. •

Milena Plebshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17381522679846576469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9204303590033468656.post-50618624803633163492011-09-09T18:07:00.002-03:002011-09-09T18:10:41.757-03:00S.O.S.

¡¡No enseñen sólo pasos...!!

Me dije “Acá pasa algo…” Estuvo buenísimo, hicimos cualquier cosa, me divertí mucho.

¡No se trata de marcar todos los acentitos! milonga, do an exhibition or a show, we are writing tango history, and this is a contribution. Many young people have gotten involved with tango; we are living the beginning of a powerful era. The genre is here to stay, there is no way that it will become hidden or marginalized again. It is constantly evolving.

M: But sometimes those who are starting lose themselves in all the multiple options.
CH: They are completely lost! I learnt with the last great milongueros, I took the information directly from them. Those who are starting to dance don’t have this experience, they learn instead from an intermediate generation that I am a part of; we are a nexus between these old dancers and those who are younger. The problem is that we missed something in the teaching, I take total responsibility, and other colleagues should do so as well. I can’t pass on what I have learned. I was crazy about creating, because I saw a new vein in the evolution of the movement. I threw myself into that, and I lost the way to be able to pass on the tango essence that I have very much inside. Because of this I feel that lately there are a lot of people who don’t understand or know what the real essence of this dance is.

M: You have been dancing for fifteen years. What changes have you noticed in the dance?
CH: Before, people worked with precision and a particular aesthetic, in a functional and mechanical way that gave it a form, and a style. Making a movement or taking a step implied an expression of the entire body. Currently, not only has the essence been lost but the weight of the dance as well, its density and importance. To me, this new tango lost a bit of the respect for what tango is.

M: The knowledge that the milongueros passed on to us intuitively, the indescribable flavor in the way they moved is lost …
CH: Yes, it took me five months to get on the dance floor of the milonga of Almagro, I didn’t dare to, and I went every Sunday only to watch. One breathed an air of respect that cannot be found now. Maybe I still feel it in some milongas like Glorias Argentinas, La Baldosa or in places that are further from the circuit of younger tango. I also took that essence from you and the dancers of your generation. I feel that the people of today are not motivated, they don’t want to work or research.
They don’t want to go to the bottom of the situation; they stay on the surface. This also has to do with the new movements and dynamics that are used, if they are not performed with some power they turn out cold.

M: The internal discourse of the movement is as important as the external form.
CH: Ten years ago, when I went to milongas, I could stay watching a couple go once around the entire dance floor because there was something that attracted me, made me keep my eyes on them. Today I don’t watch for more than twenty seconds because they are all the same. You see a couple circling and the next one behind them is doing the same thing, and the rest as well. There isn’t anything that attracts me, which excites me. Except if I go to the few traditional places that are left.

M: Do you think that the people who dance automatically or repeating formulas could do it in a more internal way?
CH: This demands a lot of things! You know it, because you are a teacher as well, that currently, the available tango pedagogy is much more decoded than ten years ago and so it is easier to learn. Today you do a volcada and a colgada and it is the same because they are there, commercially speaking, in the same package. Then, between doing a sandwichito or a volcada… people do a volcada! Because it’s more eye-catching. In tango people are self-centered, there is much individuality. They are not going to make a sandwichito to enjoy that moment, but whatever shows them more and better. In the musical field Astor Piazzolla broke with everything but you listen to it and it is tango. And today in the dance many think that they are Piazzolla and they aren’t. I see men and women that only worry about how they are seen from the outside. It is a pretty complicated situation because it has to do with a very porteño personality and identity.

M: But the milongueros from other times were also porteños!
CH: Yes, but those milongueros had respect, delicacy and sensibility, it was totally different. I know my role is contradictory, because I also collaborated in generating this young movement. In its moment I got tired of the strict milonguero codes that didn’t correspond with my time and to rebel I tried to make my way. Today I’m a milonguero again (laughter); I’m against the people who do not cabecear (nod), who don’t have codes or respect. The value of tango has been diluted. That is why I say that many dancers are lost, they barely hold on to each other to dance and for two hours like zombies, it is very sad.

M: Sometimes I notice a competition between new currents that allow more ample movements, where the dancers use more space, and those who defend traditional tango with a closed embrace.
CH: There’s something surprising about that. There are the traditionalists who defend roots to the death and then there are those modern or alternative dancers, in other words, new tango. But if you think about it there is nothing in the middle. The traditionalists complain about the modern ones contending that they don’t dance tango, instead they do gymnastics, and the modern dancers complain that the others got stuck in time. There is no fusion, it is one group against the other, and it makes me sad because in reality we are all together.

M: Do you have any wish in relation to tango? Any pending undertaking?
CH: I’m going to tell you a story. I was into rock-and-roll; I had long hair and played the drums. I hated tango, I didn’t like it one bit, I couldn’t even listen to it. But when I went to take a class with Ricardo Barrios and Victoria Vieyra, I embraced my dance partner for the first time and I got goose bumps. I said, “there’s something going on here…” and I never stopped. That magical moment was my beginning. On the other hand, a few years ago I went to the “La Trastienda” milonga organized by Horacio Godoy. I walked in and I saw you. I wanted to dance with you but second-guessed myself. I went back and forth until I asked you. I remember we were talking, then we embraced each other and in that moment I felt 40 years of tango. In the embrace, do you understand? We hadn’t taken a single step! It was simply from the way in which you held me. For me that was the most powerful moment of the tanda. Then we danced for a long time. It was great, we did all sort of things, I enjoyed myself. But the moment of that embrace, like the one of my first class and some others, have marked me in regards to my relationship with the dance. I’m talking about the intimacy of the embrace. With very few people have I been able to feel the same way, much has been lost. My wish for the dance of tango, then, is that the shared intensity returns, in the soul. Not to stay in the surface, but to feel it inside. That the genre evolves from that intimacy. The essence of tango is in the embrace and the person you are dancing with.

M: What else can I say?

• – J.B. – M.P.

• El Tangauta Nº 176 (JUN 2009) • © El Tangauta 2009 •

E N G L I S H T R A N S L A T I O N

Julio Balmaceda

Jury and trends
MP: Everybody has his own interpretation about what "tango salón" is supposed to be. On the other hand, the message of the organizers and of the jury when they cast their votes is not completely clear in regards to the parameters to consider while training. It is important to emphasize that the Asociación de Maestros, Bailarines y Coreógrafos de Tango Argentino (AMBCTA) is the institution appointed by the authorities to elect the jury and write the rules the competitors must follow.

JB: In the last years I feel there was a tacit message from the juries saying "if you don't dance Villa Urquiza style, you cannot win". That's not fair! It's not possible to have everybody dancing the same way. There are many people who could have arrived to advanced stages of the championship but were eliminated for not being aligned with the Villa Urquiza style. I have talked this with Villa Urquiza milongueros and with AMBCTA people and they agreed with me.

MP: In theory, what is evaluated is the tango danced in milongas, social tango. Perhaps it is a mistake to call the category "tango salón". It is confusing and limiting. Where do you think that the problem resides?

JB: The problem is that everything is reduced to Villa Urquiza style. I'll create the Boedo style, Plebs! There is an initiative to name Villa Urquiza as tango capital. Why should Villa Urquiza be tango capital? I don't agree with that idea. There are many styles with their own nuances and riches. Besides, some members of juries are caught in the past. To be a juror it is necessary to be aware of what’s going on with tango dance around the world.

MP: Many people need models to imitate. I don't particularly agree with that because they turn into stereotypes, copies of the fashionable styles. Tango is a popular dance, everybody dances it as he wishes, provided that he complies with the essential: two people united by an embrace, one of them indicating an action, the other one reacting, both using some basic tools or steps. With those elements, each one creates his own style.

JB: The competitors should be able to participate with any style they wish. You know that during the learning process you slowly grow. You first get keen on one teacher, then on another, you start trying new ways and that's how you build your dance. People start to arrive to the dance, start to land, and taxiing along, they "dance". The truth is that today people dance with what they learn from the teachers, but also from Internet videos. This is not bad, if you know how to watch and you take what you see to recreate, to change or as a starting point for something else.

MP: Learning was always through watching. Some years ago there weren't any technique lessons, or, with a few exceptions, teachers who gave great lectures about theory. We should encourage dancers interested in developing something original to research, opening their minds and practising different styles, taking something from each one to make their own menu with those ingredients, adding their own creativity, which is what you do intuitively. In your dance it is interesting to see the strong traditional base plus all that you have studied, what you have seen and what you are experimenting with the new tendencies, making you vibrate with what happens and what happened. The idea, I think, is to make up a personal and unique synthesis. And without a name. Why is it necessary to stick a label to it?

JB: What I most value of you is that your dance kept changing. That's what is marvelous about it! You went from working with linear to working with circular dynamics and connection with the partner. The space options for a couple are few. You have the square, the triangle and the circle, which is inside the square. There are no more options in your dance area. I am referring to the geometric shapes that support the dance. Each dancer chooses a shape to support his dance.

MP: They are tools that we have to create.

JB: There are no great mysteries. The magic is in what you do with those elements. And the members of a jury should be conversant with that information.

Dancing
JB: Look, Plebs, for me the guy who dances, dances, and that's it! It is not about tango salón or any other style. To dance is to be part of the music, to listen with the body and to translate that in movement.

MP: There is something I try to transmit in the articles I write for El Tangauta: to find the natural quality of the movement, to inhabit it, to be it. To vibrate with one’s spirit, completely surrendering from the guts and not so much from the mind. Also, to avoid postures.

JB: In the dictionary the word "posture" means something unnatural.

MP: Of course! You looked it up in the dictionary! (Laughter)

JB: I like a lot this idea of the championship; I think it is very important.

MP: It's the first time media pay a bit more of attention to tango and the important point is that it draws new people to it.

We all love this dance and we want it to live on keeping its essence. Together we can help to its dissemination, preservation and necessary evolution.

Our suggestions

• Members of a jury must be impartial and not allow their egos to intrude while evaluating. A juror must have a neutral attitude when evaluating, appreciating good dancing and its evolution, irrespective of the style
• Dance juror should have wide knowledge about how the movement is, be able to discern if the couple dances with the music, if it moves correctly through the dance floor, if it is harmonious, etc.
• To try to have all "tango salón" styles represented in the jury.
• To exercise more care in order to select a committed jury
• To have substitute jurors who follow the competition to call in the event of absences.
• It would be positive for the members of the jury to be able to discuss among themselves just before they vote. • – J.B. – M.P.

• El Tangauta Nº 176 (JUN 2009) • © El Tangauta 2009 •
• Gracias | Thanks.

See english translation below

Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

Dance of words

I have heard it said several times that verbal expression is not easy for us dancers, since we express ourselves through our bodies. I believe of great importance to realize that we can also transmit the theoretical concepts of the dance, the customs and codes of behavior in the dance floor, its history, etc. .

Our way of "saying" is through movement. But in our formation and through our dancing we intuitively use a complex analytic mechanism to translate ideas into movements. The issue is that it is not a habit to put in words how and why steps and sequences work. It is true that upon focusing great part of the attention in resolving situations through motor skills, it is normal not to use verbal expression in equal amounts.

Tango is different from other dances. Its mechanics require intellectual work. In tango it is necessary to develop the analysis of the movement, since it is indispensable to use it in improvisation, a situation where a complex association of characteristics function simultaneously.

It can be positive for the protagonists of this tango boom to increase the explanations on what surrounds the dance itself. It is valuable when in classes the teachers transmit also the theory side of it, as it relates to the operation of social dancing if the lesson is on this subject, or to expressive aspects if the lesson is about exhibition dance. Also, the contributions that choreographers and researchers can make through texts about the ideas that support their work are of great importance for the evolution of this art of popular origin.

I consider very necessary to leave written documents and footage for future generations. The documents on the dance of tango during its first burgeoning era, in the decades of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, are minimal and do not reflect the true significance of this social movement at the time. At present the audiovisual recording is guaranteed thanks to the proliferation of video. Today it is very easy to film the dance and to disseminate it through Internet since it allows people to access what is happening with tango everywhere.

In recent years, in this rebirthing of tango various books have been published that contribute very interesting data. For example, Quién me quita lo bailado (Who can take away what I have danced) written by Juan Carlos Copes and the two volumes titled El tango, una danza by Rodolfo Dinzel, among many others. Also numerous novels about tango and the milonga have appeared in Argentina and in other countries.

Though viewing the movement is the most attractive aspect of the registration of the dance, collecting videos is not enough to show the things that emerge in each period. Writing or words transmit what the image is not able to and are definitively fundamental additions at the time of recording history.
Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

Publicado en El Tangauta - EDICION nro 170
Traducción: Dolores Longo.Milena Plebshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17381522679846576469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9204303590033468656.post-7227755934438345572008-12-17T15:51:00.008-02:002009-01-13T17:27:27.445-02:00Noviembre 2008 - Torsión y pivot<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 302px; height: 316px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP150SzWxGWW8TkibJYzHMvJEq1pU6ti_h5-eXjBZDzmpfOH_ZsMQOuV6hHvUvYjCmkBZP0GcwpBPmNHLtwSs8s2Gn-qaTnO7xnb0xw8KzM2grhBtnh7coq_HmaUT_RAK5VMRH399ANZA/s400/Baile-I.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280820308000719938" />

See english translation below

María Mondino y Pablo Inza . Chicago Tango Week 08
Foto / Photo: Alejandro Almanza

Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

Torsion & pivot.

An opposition of hip and shoulders produces the change of direction while dancing tango, with the backbone as axis and the vertex in the waist. As a consequence a rotation normally called pivot is generated in the base foot, where the weight is supported by the metatarsus. This combined mechanism is functional both to the male lead and the female answer, in different ways depending on the role.

Great part of the ability in tango centers in the fluid management of this instance and its infinite applications. We can say that the two essential elements of this partner dance are the walk and the changes of direction, caused by the mechanics of the embrace or link. The "ocho", a basic figure in tango, is formed by a step or change of weight and a pivot. This last one is particularly interesting, since it is the key to open the multiple possibilities of the dance. From controlling it depends many times the quality of the performance both on the dance floor and the stage. The pivot of the foot is the concrete consequence of the torsion of the middle part of the body.

I usually say in my classes that it would be convenient to have this mechanism well “oiled” with everything that this implies: good performance of both the proposal and the answer of the dancers through the embrace, the couple’s axis and the way their bodies are joined, and the capacity to measure the rotation of the spiral that this motion system produces on each impulse given or received.

In the role of the woman, it is interesting to explore the state of the body during the torsion and the pivot. This is the situation during which changes happen and they can be truly unexpected. This is why it is advisable to work on and experience maximum physical alertness, the capacity to quickly answer and at the same time to allow for a certain relaxation that favors being receptive to what may happen. To achieve this is useful to have dynamic tools such as the work of tension and complementary relaxation, balance and a good understanding of the dance encounter. As for the man side, the management of the torsion has to do with a voluntary action, that is to say with its control, and it is also valuable to study it. This allows for a wider creative range in the dance and increases its harmony.

But with this development I do not mean to generate a more pronounced pivot than it is necessary. It is only a matter of investigating it, as it relates to the whole of the dance, its nuances and possibilities in the corresponding position: that of stimulus and consequent transformation of those involved in the dance.
Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

see english translation below

Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

Quality control.

The success of the dancing of tango in the world increases day by day. Many people who dance see teaching as a good way of making a living. The problem is that many times they are not qualified to do it. And beginner students not always can tell how suitable are the teachers they choose.

Since tango is a popular dance, there is not way of exercising quality control of the pedagogical aptitudes of the teachers. In the academic environment for the arts or any another category, competence is determined through exams and the issuance of certificates or ratings. How does one determine in tango if what a person communicates is valuable and is correctly transmitted? There are several projects that aim to the systematization of the communication of the dance in order to, among others things, regulate the quality of the instructors. Personally, I don’t agree with having a unified code of teaching. I do not believe it is appropriate to have only one set of regulations of steps and sequences. I think that this would kill creativity. If we all did the salida, the ochos, etc, in the same way with the purpose of defending the consumers, the dance would turn monotonous and boring. What we can recognize, in the great many people who have danced tango since its beginnings, are their tendencies or styles. From the primitive tango canyengue, through all the known varieties: tango salón, with sequences and fantasy, and those which have become fashionable recently: milonguero, villa urquiza, and tango nuevo, among others. An alternative to implement some type of teaching certification, could be to create a regulating entity with representatives of each one of the tendencies, and that each area dealt with the quality of its corresponding style. At the same time all would be interconnected, and they would consult with each other in a dynamic and flexible way, since the boundaries between the different styles may intersect. Given the immensity of the field of the dance of tango at a global level the challenge would be to create a solid and efficient structure that functioned internationally. If improving the quality of the teachers were a common concern among those of us who have roles of responsibility in the genre, it would be good to get together to discuss and propose ways to preserve the quality level of this expression that we love so much and that gives us so many satisfactions.
Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

See english translation below

Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

Technique for all!

When improving the level of dance in tango, technique classes can help to know and handle the body, its movement, one’s own muscular coordination and the connection with the partner better.

These lessons are oriented specifically to improve the physical aptitude to dance. In the mythical golden era of the genre this type of training, that abounds so much in our days, did not exist. The transmission of the dance happened between people, to a large extent spontaneously, from generation to generation. During the recent come back of tango dancing, the teachers began to propose resources to expedite the incorporation of know-how, such as technique classes, as a practice complementary to regular courses. There, sequences are broken into small cells to delve in the synthetic mechanisms of the movement. This modality is appropriate for couples as well as for individual work. In this last case classes of technique for women have proliferated extensively, while those for men much less so. For some reason, the ladies show a lot more interest in improving their dexterity and in these practices they have the opportunity of learning without depending on the man. I believe it is good to work on female autonomy to improve the way we adapt to the diverse styles of tango that different men may propose. Through it, by gaining greater control of my movements, axis and muscles, I acquire more independence which allows me, although it may seem contradictory, to give myself to the situation, responding to the man’s proposal with greater ease. But the male role in the dance of tango is the most complex one. He has to decide many issues simultaneously: creation of the sequences, spatial development, interpretation of the music, relaying all these to the woman through the embrace and, if we speak of the social dance, the relationship with the couples around him. Perhaps it would also be advisable for them to have individual training to expand their physical capacities in the responsibility of leading. But let’s not forget that it takes two for this dance. All the know-how incorporated is valid as long as it is applied to the connection with the partner. And most important of all: to dancing!!!, which is a lot more than "moving together".

Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

See english translation below

Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

Festivals: the idea is to share .

For several years tango festivals and congresses have been the rage all over the world. The first encounter was in Stanford, USA, in 1991.

These events last several days and they are usually structured in schedules including: group classes, exhibitions by the teachers, milongas, shows, sale of products and eventually art exhibitions, films and lectures. The most popular ones summon people of various origins and promote participation. The "stars” of these events are the dancers-teachers, in couples or soloists, and their number depends on the magnitude of the event, but the students also have a fundamental role. The great success of tango today is one’s own experience. For this it is necessary to have an adequate foundation.

In some of these proposals the variety of professors with their diversity of styles abounds. To the students, above all the ones that are in their beginnings, it can be difficult to incorporate the different techniques of the teachers, which at times seem even opposite in their forms. To be able to choose which classes to take, a solution could be to elect instructors that maintain a stylistic similarity among them, and that turn out to be complementary in their essence. Also, the organizers try to balance the quantity of men and women registered in the classes so that the possible difference does not hamper the transfer of information. For this they resort to assistants with the necessary preparation.

Though those who register are interested in incorporating new information and they desire to dance, the fundamental objective is the social encounter and in that we are all involved and mixed: artists, organizers and participants.

After more than fifteen years of history in these events, added to the great offering of milongas and seminars everywhere, a vast global tango network has been created that contains us, who form this new race, and permits that we meet people from any country through the tango embrace, often without speaking the same language.

For us teachers, it is an interesting and often enriching experience, since we share work and social spaces with other colleagues, and we have the possibility to get to know each other in a different environment from the habitual one.

Tango grows day by day in geometric progression and it is well worth it to continue to generate structures that facilitate the interaction of the atoms of this design that weaves itself without pause with ochos and intertwined bodies.
Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

See english translation below

Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

One could conjecture that the man possesses more advantages since, in general, he takes the initiative. However, the woman also has several tactics to propitiate an encounter.

What factors contribute (or not) so that we dance when we want to at the milonga? There is not just one answer to this question or a sole formula to attract the attention of the person with whom we desire to dance.

Let’s start by mentioning the two normal ways of inviting to dance: the non-verbal one –that is to say, the cabeceo (1)– and the direct invitation. This last modality is habitual among friends, although it has extended quite a bit lately.

In any case, to manage to dance or not with a specific person does not depend only on the procedure chosen to invite him/her. The possibility to establish clear eye contact, the circulation allowed by the room and the way the tables are laid out, among others, also have an impact. A few places still exist where an old custom remains: men are seated on one side of the dance floor and women on the other, like in a combat. In this case the meeting of the eyes is perhaps easier. But, I repeat, they are not very many places like that left.

One could conjecture that the man possesses more advantages since, in general, he takes the initiative. Either through the cabeceo or verbal invitation, he has perhaps more alternatives in his favor. However, there are other elements that could complicate the invitation to a lady, for example: shyness, fear of a negative answer or lack of visual connection. In this last case, he can solve it by moving until he enters in the visual field of the woman so that he is able, then, to invite her

The tactics of the woman to favor an encounter are also diverse. They go from the subtlety of a posture denoting presence, a direct look or a careful attire, to the boldness –increasingly more frequent– of the woman herself taking the initiative to invite him. This last practice implies the risk that the man may not want to dance with her. Then he might accept without really wanting to do it, only as a courtesy, or reject the invitation.

Some nights of milonga, after having planchado (2), my friends and I have complained that "there are no men" that ask us to dance. Talking about this subject, Elina Roldán told me that a dear friend that left us not too long ago, Elvio Vitali –bookseller by profession, culture militant and milonguero– told her about our table of women: "You are chatting with your eyes nailed to the table. One wants to ask you to dance but you do not look, not even by chance."

Both for men and for women, success in this enterprise has a lot to do with intention.

See english translation below

T I P S

Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

During tango classes, women often ask about the use of shoes.

A RECURRING question is what is the right height for the heel. High heels favor the female cadence. Using high heels generates in the woman a more unstable balance, which makes the man’s proposal easier. But the higher the heel, the greater the need for control of the hip, to be able to flow in the dance.

Using techniques to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles helps to improve the control of this necessary instability. In a dance style with figures, where it is required that each one of the dancers is in control of their own balance, problems can arise if there is not enough technical ability. On the other hand, when dancing “apilado” tango style it is possible that the problems of wearing very high heels disappear, since the axis and the weight of the couple’s bodies are shared and mutually support each other.

On the other hand, the level of the curvature of the arch of the feet impacts in the comfort or discomfort in the use of heels. An instep with not much of an arch will force the angle of the hip forward and more control will be required to remain erect on very high heels. Persons with a very arched instep, on the other hand, might not have a problem doing it, which does not mean that they don’t still need control of the muscles of the perineum to resolve with ease the link between movements.

At the start, it is recommended to use lower heels since in this case the axis of the body has less oscillation and, consequently, the student will have less difficulties to surmount. The best is to increase the height of the heels as one begins to feel more comfortable.

Another question is: Should or shouldn’t the heels rest on the floor sometimes while dancing? There are no fixed rules in tango as it is a popular dance; therefore, it is a personal election. In my case, I prefer to rest the heels when possible, both to rest my legs and to use dynamic nuances of tension and relaxation. Maintaining the heels separated from the floor at all times requires certain continuous muscular force and this translates to lack of flexibility if the required control is not present. Also, resting the heels could make the control of the hip we talked about previously easier and give the feeling of a more “grounded” dance. •

T I P S

• At the start, it is recommended to use lower heels. •
• Use techniques to fortify the muscles of the pelvic floor. •
• Each woman has the choice to rest the heels on the floor
or not, according to what is more convenient for her.
Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

Publicado en El Tangauta - EDICION nro 164
Traducción: Dolores Longo.Milena Plebshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17381522679846576469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9204303590033468656.post-61187300665181695552008-09-11T15:19:00.005-03:002009-01-13T17:25:54.377-02:00Mayo 2008 - Clases: niveles

Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

Classes: levels

In the teaching of tango, professors and students meet with the difficulty generated by the presence in the same class of people with different levels of dancing. It is customary for classes to be structured in three levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced.

Argentine tango is not an academic dance, it is a popular dance and the method for teaching it is eclectic. It is not usual for the teacher to do a pre-selection before the class. This partner dance is exotic and magnetic. The intricate movements of the legs generate a fascination, which is irresistible for many. There is great anxiety and impatience to test the complexity of the dance and not always is there a conscience of where one stands in the process of learning. This can complicate the flow of the lesson, if it is aimed to a specific level. At present, there is great demand for classes in all latitudes and regularly, as teachers, we see people who take lessons at a level for which they are not yet ready. Besides, as it is a partner dance, the disparity of levels could complicate the progress of a partner with greater experience.
Tango is a suggestive, attractive dance, and perhaps it tempts to experiment with dazzling figures immediately, when the basics have not been solidly absorbed yet. It is a priority to work in the harmony of this dance system from the beginning: balance, coordination, posture, embrace, the mechanics of action and reaction that generate the whole dance, the changes of weight and of direction, the pivot, etc. It is best to start simply and to build from there, evolving according to one’s possibilities. One should appeal to common sense to choose the appropriate level. When transmitting the rudiments of the dance, the teacher gives very specific explanations about its essence and it is very useful to take advantage of them. Simplicity in dancing is a challenge. Moving slowly offers the possibility to verify if one has balance and if the different instances of the dance can be resolved.
How can it be determined if one is attending a class at the right level? The sign could be frustration. If after repeated attempts to do the steps taught by the teacher, frustration about not being able to do them persists, it is possible that one does not have the level required for it.
Also, it should not be forgotten that dancing is enjoyment, better to go step by step in order not to miss out on it. And even if one has a good level of dancing, it is healthy to return periodically to review the basics. Visiting other teachers can give us different views of the elementary material and thus enrich our dance. In closing, it is worth to recall the famous phrase that I heard the great Virulazo repeat many times: "The day that you start to believe that you dance well, you stop learning.” •
Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

Publicado en El Tangauta - EDICION nro 163
Traducción: Dolores Longo.Milena Plebshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17381522679846576469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9204303590033468656.post-1652518219408544252008-09-11T15:16:00.005-03:002009-01-13T17:05:50.852-02:00Abril 2008 - Confianza y entrega
Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

Trusting and giving oneself

Upon finding ourselves in the embrace of tango we engage our body, we involve ourselves at a physical level and we are vulnerable. There is an intense exchange of energy between both participants and hygiene plays a fundamental role when sharing this dance.

Historically milongueros have always been immaculate people careful with their personal appearance. They are very conscious of the importance of their composure and of smelling good when getting ready to face a night of tango embraces. To share this dance of two, it is important to follow certain codes that should be communicated: neatness, fresh breath, absence of body odors and excessive perspiration.
The main reason for social dancing is to share it with someone else, to enjoy together and to please the person embracing us. There is an issue of trust and of giving oneself. With each tanda we welcome a new dance companion. We offer our bodies in a total and intense way, committing hearing, sight, touch and smell. Therefore we need for the embrace to smell good in addition to being good. Body odors will bring down the quality of a good male or female dancer in an instant.
Perhaps in other countries this situation is lived differently, perhaps in other cultures it is not a problem… But we are speaking of Argentine tango, where the embrace can be very close, and neatness and good aroma are fundamental. Personal care and being meticulous about our appearance is part of the culture in the Rio de la Plata. We may bathe even more than once a day; we use perfumes, deodorant, colognes, mouthwashes… Caught up in the enjoyment and the enthusiasm of dancing, at times we do not notice that we are soaked in sweat. That is why, out of respect for others, some people that sweat a lot, carry clothes to changed into, or they let a tanda go by without dancing to get dry and to be refreshed. Also there are men that carry a handkerchief in their left hand to avoid the contact of perspiring hands.
Although I speak from my female point of view, this subject applies to both genders. Men or women–we all should pay attention to this. It is not so difficult: shower, deodorant, clean clothes, a mint in the mouth and, if possible, not to expose ourselves to the “exotic” odor of frying food that stays in clothes and hair. A dry and pleasant smelling embrace is definitely a good start. And everybody else will be really grateful. •
Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

Publicado en El Tangauta - EDICION nro 162
Traducción: Dolores Longo.Milena Plebshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17381522679846576469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9204303590033468656.post-37589716602914130592008-09-11T15:14:00.004-03:002009-01-13T17:05:01.455-02:00Marzo 2008 - El tango, un clásico

See english translation below

Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

TANGO, A CLASSIC

Lately I have read statements from colleagues that speak of the traditional tango as “aged forms”, speaking of dance and of music. As for the dance, in my opinion, a smooth, improvised and walked tango “is”, never ages, because it is the matrix from where everything was born; it is the synthesis. There is nothing more modern than a walked tango, with simple changes of front. It implies “is”, it takes place in the present. Walking the tango is the abc, and the alphabet cannot be ignored to speak. Later those basic elements are used as tools for research. With the evolution of tango and its diverse searches, that matrix gets polished, is refined and adjusted in the synthesis. What perhaps goes out of fashion is styles–better said, the mannerisms or clichés of those styles. What does age is the mediocre, the artist who copies.

Something similar happens with the music: Carlos Di Sarli, Osvaldo Pugliese, Aníbal Troilo, Julio de Caro, Horacio Salgán, Ástor Piazzolla, etc. all have originality and extraordinary melodic and rhythmic wealth. Inspiration, play and intensity are carried to the extreme. Who dares to say that their music has aged? Personally, I do not feel that the post–Piazzolla composers have surpassed the great names of tango.
In the dance a new current appeared at the end of the 90s that broke the traditional structure of the dance, generating an alternative movement, that, I believe, ended up enriching the purest traditional dance. Young dancers that defend traditional tango also incorporate some elements of the new current, and this changes the dance for the better. The new forms filter in, even without us noticing. All pigeonholing is bad. We cannot deny where we come from, or the new things that appear, they change us in spite of ourselves.

Traveling through the world I see people that enter in this new current that many call Nuevo Tango without going first through its roots. They lack something, the dance appears as something of a parody and is dangerously distant from the origins. Fortunately purists always exist that preserve the tradition and, thanks to the opportune arrival of movies and videos, documents of the purest tradition of the dance exist. There is a return to the sources that occurs cyclically that does not allow the roads of evolution to stray too much and lose in the end the essence that keeps tango alive through generations and their changes. •
Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

Publicado en El Tangauta - EDICION nro 161
Traducción: Dolores Longo.Milena Plebshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17381522679846576469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9204303590033468656.post-67648060001130040682008-09-11T15:11:00.003-03:002009-01-13T17:04:26.741-02:00Febrero 2008 - Justicia natural
Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

Natural justice

In the marquis of theaters and in the list of participants in tango festivals, the name of the dancer is almost never comparable to that of singers, musicians and orchestras. The rare exceptions are those where it is the dancers themselves who produce the plays or festivals. For them, promotion is very costly and they do not usually appear in the main newspaper headlines. In the history of Argentine movies this omission is seen clearly: during its great golden era there are extremely few tango dance scenes. It is worth remembering the short dance scene by el Cachafaz in the movie Tango, where the camera takes the dancers from the hip up, while all the complexity was expressed with the legs. Dancing was always seen as something so natural that it was not considered an art. Sadly no filmmaker thought to document the great phenomenon of the dance of tango in the 30s, 40s and 50s. It took a lot of time for it to be considered as an art form. The turning point happened with the show Tango Argentino of Claudio Segovia and Hector Orezzoli, a great success on Broadway in 1985. Though the objective of the show was not particularly to promote the dancers, dance occupied a great part of the show, and it had never been displayed with such luxury, with the best tango dancers sharing the same stage. The world was fascinated by that partner dance as intricate as it was romantic. But the producers and the mass media still do not understand that dance can also be a business. In fact it is. In the world today Argentine tango is danced socially, and there is a reason why Hollywood puts it in its movies. While it is true that the dance is given more room as a fundamental element in the show, the dancer is not seen as a protagonist, with credits similar to those of singers, musicians and orchestras. Perhaps the reason is that the record companies promote their artists and the equivalent for dancers still does not exist, for example, as backup for massive video distribution. Another reason for this difference could be that to watch dancing a special kind of attention is required. On the other hand, music and singing keep you company; one can listen to them while one does other things, and this makes it easier to enjoy them.
It was a surprise to listen recently to tango events organizers in Buenos Aires complain: “Now it is all about the dance, one must insist with the musical concerts”. Or to hear Uruguayan singer Malena Muyala say in the TV program Tocá madera, that in Montevideo the tango environment for singers and musicians is growing thanks to the phenomenon of tango dancing.
While I write this, I smile to myself. •
Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

It is a recurring event in tango classes for students to declare that other teachers explained some or other technical detail of the dance in a different way to what was just explained.

See english translation below

Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

Multiple truths

The students normally are very passionate and it can happen that they become distressed upon receiving indications that can even seem opposite from the diverse teachers that they take classes from. They do not know what to do and it even makes them angry at times. It is a very complex subject because, at the level of basic learning, it is difficult for the student to understand this situation that happens in popular dances and perhaps in tango more than in other dances.
Tango is born of the urban popular tradition and does not have fixed standards. There is no specific technique, or single way to do the steps. Nor is there a unique posture or style. There are as many styles as are people who dance. Large groups and currents can be identified. What I say in my classes is that everything that is taught by good teachers, it does not matter to what current they belong, is valid. I suggest that they experience different forms, go to diverse teachers and then they work to do their own synthesis.
For me, what is most enjoyable about tango is its diversity. It is good to have an open and playful attitude at the moment of learning. To take from each teacher what he delivers, for which he has prepared for years, and to accept that one can receive from different teachers indications on a same subject that seem to be contradictory. This is not bad, it just is. There is no doubt that each teacher offers the best than he has developed in his professional career. There is no absolute truth because each teacher has “his” absolute truth. Some twenty years ago, Miguel Zotto gathered a few teachers and milongueros at the Club Sin Rumbo. The purpose was to codify the dance of tango, and thus to unify its teaching, defining the different types of salidas, developments and basic resolutions. It was impossible because each one defended his way. Tango is passionate, visceral, and this intensity is one of its more notable characteristics.

In the learning of any discipline, we are accustomed to be told exactly what one must do and, in general, there is agreement about forms and structure. In tango there is not a unique base structure. There are a few elements available plus the creativity that each one puts into them. It is healthy to take an active role in learning, seeking, testing and analyzing what is learned. It is a worthy challenge to traverse. •
Copyright © El Tangauta 2008

The energy generated by two bodies embraced and moving to the beat of a tango is unique.

See english translation below

Copyright © El Tangauta 2007

Embraced in a spiral

The torsos are connected, and through the mechanism of action and reaction, they wind and unwind in a spiral, drawing circles toward the infinite and toward the center of the earth, causing a movement of singular energy to happen. Symbolically similar to the kundalini energy that travels through the spine curling and uncurling vertically, but as two people, and embraced…
Each couple enters necessarily in a trance while improvising, since it is like a meditation. Meditating means, simply, to concentrate on something. In somebody’s arms or embracing another person, we concentrate on pleasing and complementing each other and on flowing through the dance floor. The mind becomes quiet and as a consequence, the outside world disappears.
Do you recognize this situation? The milonga itself is a space where we are cut off from mundane things. People seldom talk about their problems there. The male action and the female reaction of the couple moving in spirals recycles their energy, releases endorphins (the hormone of pleasure), elevates self-esteem and a sensation of wellbeing and happiness envelops us. How many times have we arrived exhausted and halfhearted to a milonga and upon listening to the music and beginning to dance, the exhaustion disappears and is replaced by enthusiasm and enjoyment! This deep harmonization that takes place at the spiritual, emotional, and physical levels in the dance of tango has a sacred quality to it. And what is magic about these encounters, is that since each person brings his or her own particularity to them, each one is unique. Each encounter has its own DNA. During a night we have various possibilities to experience diverse encounters. And there lies the advantage of being a woman. Given the fact that our role is to adapt to the diverse proposals of the men, for us each time is absolutely different. The man has a style that prevails, although he changes partners.
Parallel to this, we experience the characteristics of the 8 that is also the symbol for infinity. The movements that tango draws are an endless number of ochos. More pronounced or subtler, the wave produced while collecting the feet in each change of weight depicts, even in what may seem a straight line, a slight undulation. The 8 symbolizes energy traveling continuously through its shape, recycling itself endlessly. Literally, when we dance tango, we charge our energy batteries.
I strongly believe that the expansion of tango through the planet is a movement that appears with force in these apocalyptic times to tell us that change is possible.
Without doubt, a saving embrace.•
Copyright © El Tangauta 2007

Publicado en El Tangauta - EDICION nro 158
Traducción: Dolores Longo.Milena Plebshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17381522679846576469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9204303590033468656.post-60906261594101348732008-09-08T15:37:00.005-03:002009-01-13T17:02:09.043-02:00Noviembre 2007 - Coreografía: un mensaje claro

See english translation below

Copyright © El Tangauta 2007

Choreography: A clear message.

The resolution of a choreography through the accumulation of figures without a definite idea does not turn out to be the best option.

Tango dancing is attractive to the eyes in itself, many times, even irrespective of its quality. Many people, seeing tango shows, go crazy at the sight of a pair of ganchos and a provocative caress. But what transcend in time are the original creations that are different from the average. Though there are no definite rules for choreographic creation, I believe it is fundamental to work on an underlying structure that functions as backing for each dance, to increase the connection with the audience. One must take time to go deeper and beyond choosing a musical piece and filling it with steps. Eduardo Arquimbau wisely said that to choreograph a tango is like writing a letter: there is a greeting and a presentation of the subject, a development of it and a conclusion. It is useful to start from a foundation idea, about what one wants to express: a story, a sensation, one or diverse movement dynamics, the music and what it inspires, an emotional state, an image, a style, a character, a vision, a dream, etc. and to work in each case with the reason for that intention or election. One should build from that original idea by researching the choreographic style, the space design, and also, very important, the choice of the wardrobe and, if necessary, elements, props, lighting, and everything that helps to generate a favorable atmosphere for that fundamental idea. The intention is to think of a starting point or conductive thread from where to create. It does not matter whether it is understood or not, the message enters through different channels of perception, not only through the rational logical mind. Even if it is a matter of showing pure dance, it is convenient to start from a definite concept that is going to promote the dance from a definite place. In synthesis, I propose the research of new forms, even in the most traditional dance: new dynamics, choreographic games, states of the dancing being, counterpoint of personalities, and to imagine the environment: where is this dance taking place and who is dancing it? It is not necessary to make it explicit, that would be stating the obvious. This mechanism works as script and internal expressive support at the moment of performing. The audience enters into the expressive code when it receives a clear message, albeit subliminal, and thus, the choreographic creation remains engraved in the retina and in the heart, as an indelible memory. •
Copyright © El Tangauta 2007

Publicado en El Tangauta - EDICION nro 157
Traducción: Dolores Longo.Milena Plebshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17381522679846576469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9204303590033468656.post-53627164857665940492008-09-08T15:34:00.004-03:002009-01-13T17:01:31.471-02:00Octubre 2007 - Benditos adornos femeninos

See english translation below

Copyright © El Tangauta 2007

Blessed female embellishments!

When taking tango classes women request a lot to be taught embellishments. That is to say, the foot movements added by women, that are not, specifically, a response to the movement proposed by the leader

I perceive a lot of anxiety in a great number of the women attending our classes to learn to do embellishments. Many, pretty, varied and as complex as possible! Early in my career, I was worried about how many decorations I was able “to put” in the dance with my partner, feeling intimately that he always “did more” than I. We all go through different stages in the development of our path to dancing tango. The importance of the male role in this dance is inescapable. The responsibility and complexity of the creative part and the leading of the dance lies with the man and for that reason also it is a lot more difficult for him to learn. As for the male embellishments, there isn’t a major conflict if he has a good dance level, since they form part of the whole and he resolves them along with the other instances he is in charge of. I am referring to improvised exhibition or social dancing. It is a priority to work on the basic technical facets of tango before devoting ourselves to decorations. Without a good base, balance, connection and response to our partner, we are not prepared to beautify our dance. We can divide female decorations in two groups: the ones that we do during the dance, that should not interfere with the man’s proposal and those we do at moments when the man pauses, giving us the opportunity to do them.
It is important to be alert to the environment and to grasp the timing in the dance floor, so as to not over–extend ourselves, complicating the flow of couples around it. It is good to work on decorations so that they form part of the global dance, without interrupting the energy by doing them and keeping the connection with the partner at all times. Choose the ones that feel comfortable to you, and it is better not to repeat or copy what others do. In tango is fundamental to give space to creativity to be different from others. At times one can see women that do too much, perhaps that is part of that anxiety that I mentioned before, and the couple is seen as unbalanced. This, in general terms, is not good either. At the professional level, there is a choreography, therefore the time for female decorations is established among the couple, since once set, it is repeated always the same. A time arrives when one relaxes, no longer worried about how many and how various embellishments one does, and paradoxically, they begin to flow naturally, they respond to an inner security and an enjoyment of the female dance role.
I believe also that, many times, less is more… •
Copyright © El Tangauta 2007

See english translation below

Copyright © El Tangauta 2007

Learning tango

An interesting letter from a reader of this column, arrived. He is a beginner tango dancer who declared, among others things, his confusion with what is usually called “to walk”.

In his letter he said: “I see the better dancers walking, but none of them do the basic step, they walk backwards, forward, straight ahead, while turning, straight back…” It is true. The dance takes place in a random way; there resides the richness of tango. And it is said that to dance tango is as natural as walking.
The method of teaching tango that starts from the 8 count “basic step” (the man starts backwards on count 1, the woman crosses on count 5, and closing happens in 6,7,8) has its difficulties if its functionality is not clarified. This is a simple, very strong structure to begin teaching the dance, but complex at the time of dancing in a milonga. Many students comment on the difficulty of entering the dance floor with the first elements learned. It is worth clarifying, as I have mentioned in other articles, that in the past people who did not have an acceptable dance level would not dance at milongas. But that is another issue. The sequence of the 8 count basic step is long and requires an amount of space that is normally not available to circulate in a dance floor; in addition there are problems related to “fronts” that can arise. People who begin learning do not have yet the resources to understand what is useful in the basic step for resolving situations on the dance floor. It can work as a first approach and a primitive experience of adaptation. But it is important to explain how to break that structure.
I also remember milonguero teachers saying “when you start a tango, never go backwards!”. They were referring to a matter of “intention”; the man, who proposes the dance, cannot begin by taking a step backwards.
Within the great variety of teachers, others start with different criteria. One of them is, precisely, for the dance couple to walk, with diverse variations, while working on the embrace and the connection and from there to intersperse options that modify that walk. The truly useful part of the basic step is the moment when the woman goes to the cross; it is the key to different options. It is important to research that moment and the possibilities that it offers for working with easier, shorter sequences and combining them on a very crowded dance floor, where there is no room for long sequences. In sum, the idea is to foster creativity and variety. There are many systems, since this is a popular dance and each person dances it as he/she wants to. But the place of social dancing is the milonga and the student needs to prepare himself to enter it in the best possible way.
Eventually, the people who are truly interested understand through experience how the dance is modified in accordance to the space available. But, perhaps others remain behind who, due to the frustration of not being able to flow with the rest of the couples, give up.
Such a shame. •
Copyright © El Tangauta 2007

See english translation below

Copyright © El Tangauta 2007

Thinking the dance… living the dance!

The dance of tango as an artistic expression is going through unusual growth. There is great desire to see exhibitions by good and different kinds of dancers.

During such performances, it happens that at times my thoughts go to the details: the steps, the wardrobe, the hairdo, the music, I perceive if the dancers are with the music or not, if they are connected to each other, I see their expressions, I observe the sequences. My mind works with their dance and becomes an important part in the act of looking at it. In some way, the dance becomes intellectual.
Other times, the couple dancing submerges me in a world of pure vibrating and feeling, of plenitude and enjoyment. All my being dances with them. It is an enjoyment that connects me with emotion and, depending on the case, with happiness. I ask myself what is the reason for this difference. Perhaps it is difficult to analyze it. In my opinion, the execution of the dance is something the tango couple should deepen, to keep the dance fresh and alive for the public. There is an intensity in the movement of great dancers that comes from a visceral place on the one hand, and a spiritual one on the other, and the energy of certain artists makes the spectator become one with them. This is so in any dance, I would say in any art form where the artists perform live. In dancing in most cases, the music has a particular importance. Fusing that emotional and instinctive part with the sound stimuli is vital for reaching the public. But I want to clarify something: I don’t mean, “to step with the music”. It goes much deeper. It would be something like feeling that the bodies are playing the music, that the music leaves the bodies through dancing. For that, once the choreography is in place, and all technical aspects characteristic of tango have been revised, one should let the hearing and touch (connection with the partner) senses predominate, and live the dynamic intensities of the sequences from a global perspective that encompasses the physical, the emotional, the spiritual and, as needed, the mental aspects. Another variation would be the couple dancing as another instrument in the musical composition; they can do a counter-melody, support or counter the rhythm, take advantage of accents, melodies, etc. But always with the inner attitude of letting the music take over the whole being. In the case where there isn’t definite music, the internal rhythm of the couple can be built up, and working in that state involves the union of the couple as a vibrant whole. One more detail, even when dancing a choreography, the primitive motor of male action and female reaction must not be forgotten. In “improvised” exhibitions the crystallization of the dance can also be seen when the couple inserts learned sequences that function like choreography.
The road is infinite and surely there are many ways to seek spontaneity. It is a matter of entering into a creative state and daring to go further. •
Copyright © El Tangauta 2007

Publicado en El Tangauta - EDICION nro 154
Traducción: Dolores Longo.Milena Plebshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17381522679846576469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9204303590033468656.post-82776322272500608472008-09-08T15:10:00.005-03:002009-01-13T16:58:44.378-02:00Julio 2007 - Lo hacemos juntos

See english translation below

We do it together

In tango it is said that the man leads the movements and the woman follows that lead. I prefer to think that we seek the way to do it together.

Communication in the improvisation of the dance happens through the link of the embrace, in any of its forms. When we speak of lead I cannot stop seeing the hand of the man moving frantically in the back of the woman to indicate her to do ochos. The suggestion to the woman of a step or sequence is a lot more than a hand on her back. There is a global intention of the torso, arms and embrace of the man to give an impulse that corresponds to the female answer.
In the case of the woman, for me, to follow means to be behind, in the literal sense of the expression. But they insist that we must step together. Then, how is this to be understood? It seems like a contradiction. So that each member of the couple can enjoy the dance, some preparation is advisable.
The man has the fundamental creative role and he develops, among others things, the capacity to present to the woman through the embrace, with adequately anticipated timing, guidance of each movement of the dance, so that they can carry out the global movement together and in a coordinated fashion.
The woman trains her capacity to control her body, her axis, torsion and the upper and lower body dissociation that causes the pivot (change of direction on one foot) and derived movements, transfer of the weight from one foot to the other, the capacity for immediate response to the proposed impulse, and a state of maximum alert attention, latent, potential, in order to perceive the new impulse. As an intellectual concept, it is not the same thing to follow than to do it together. I feel that it is better that both involved think of it in this latter way.
Although it seems that two who dance tango are one block that moves, the couple is the sum of the independence of each of them, harmoniously coordinated. At the same time, the male, after proposing the movement, accompanies the reaction of the woman, and if necessary makes some adjustment. From this we can deduct that there is a constant coming and going of the energy of both which is what feeds the dance, and asks for maximum attention and concentration of the couple.
The dance evolves, as does the form to transmit it. There are new currents of dance that propose really complex dynamics of interaction of the couple, with the intervention of the play of opposite forces, counterweights, pendular and spiraled movements, where a new analysis is necessary. But one always arrives to the same concept of unit, of two that form one; and of a valuable constant exchange of stimuli through the magnetism of the bodies that are attracted to each other, pleasantly and inevitably. •
Copyright © El Tangauta 2007

See english translation below

Copyright © El Tangauta 2007

Tango Championships

Nobody can rate desire, vocation and the will to dance.

Championships have a structure: participation of dancers, rounds of pre-selection, election of finalists and "winning", and a jury that chooses. We all know the rules of the game before we decide to participate. And as in any game, you can win or lose. It should only be a way of testing oneself in a situation of exhibition, of social encounter and if possible, of enjoyment. And if we don’t pass one round, it does not matter! Nobody is better or worse because of it. But it seems that at times we forget that this is a game. The criteria and the differences make us angry. In my case, as a juror, I feel a great responsibility for having to choose and know that I am influencing people’s destinies. I feel a lot of pressure. I perceive the dancers’ motivation, participating with so much enthusiasm, giving their best, putting in play their value and capacity. Please understand, it is not easy. Luckily, there are several jurors, the responsibility is spread among them. But, there, also lies the complication. My narcissism is severely affected when the couple I prefer is not chosen. In the last competition I was a juror in the finals for Tango de Salón. For me, this style is just walking with elegance. It is social dancing that is being evaluated, is it not? The couple I preferred was not even in the 10 finalists! But one must accept that we all do this together and the end result is the average of the evaluations. Perhaps, the selection of the jury should be optimized. The chosen jurors should be true specialists in each category, above all in Tango de Salón. In Tango Escenario the criteria are wider. The rules are not as strict as in Salón. I celebrate that in the last edition the chosen couple, from Colombia, danced a tango that was closer to tradition. Prior to this, in my opinion, the general tendency to acrobatic choreography exceeded the acceptable limits. The jury does not necessarily own the truth. On the other hand, what is the truth in tango? Tango is a dance of popular origin, without fixed patterns. If in classical ballet, which has an established language, it is impossible to say if Baryshnikov is better than Nureyev, because their styles and their eras are different, imagine in tango! How can I ask myself if Finito is better than Virulazo or vice versa, when they are so different!!! Their styles, postures and languages are so diverse! To choose only one is to diminish the spectrum of possibilities offered by this unique dance of the Río de la Plata. What we do have are inclinations, tendencies, opinions, all deserving of respect. Besides, what is valuable is the great attendance to the events and to the classes that are given within their framework. Fortunately, when the championship ends, and the comments and controversies are silenced, all goes back to tango normality. What was inflammatory at the end of August, did not seem so terrible afterwards. Until May arrives and the first rounds begin and it starts all over again…
But this time, please, let’s treat it as a game! •
Copyright © El Tangauta 2007

See english translation below

Copyright © El Tangauta 2007

The milonga’s dance floor II
Intimate tango

The proposal is to re-establish the milonga as a space for social encounter, not a place to show one’s dance; also to see if we can understand the reasons for a certain chaos that takes place during the "peak hours". We continue the debate with Graciela González, Elina Roldán, Vilma Vega, Fernando Galera and Ramiro Gigliotti on diverse aspects of the subject.

Dancing tango is primarily an intimate situation between two people who, at the same time, co-exist in that space with many other couples. The issue is to share the dance floor with care and respect. Though it is very pleasant to watch others dance, the main objective is to meet and commune with another person in the same experience. Tango is the most intimate dance that exists between two people. What has changed in the last decade is that dancing tango has become more associated to a profession. Previously, it was basically a form of social encounter. Given the number of new professional dancers, at times the milonga is used as a place to show oneself. We do not speak of special exhibitions by dance couples, but of collective dancing. It is true that young people have great enthusiasm and energy, but, in certain cases, professional eagerness is added to this mix and we see steps only appropriate for an exhibition on a very crowded dance floor. This causes difficulties for its good operation. We are thankful for the proliferation of prácticas, where the dancers can test complex figures at leisure. There are no cortinas or tandas or strict codes, just space, music and freedom.

What women want: In most cases, an embrace that provides good support is much more important to them than many complex steps. The magnetism generated between the two torsos is all that is needed for dancing. Women are focused on being a foil for the man. They are thankful when he is careful, and does not lead steps that require movements larger than the room that the couple has available at any given moment. They do not need the man to show them all the steps that he knows. For many of them, just to travel through the dance floor in an embrace is enough.

What men want: They celebrate being trusted and allowed to lead. They expect that the position of the woman’s arms will not block their lead and that, in spite of giving themselves to the embrace, women will not lose their axis; that when they do embellishments they will continue to be aware, and not take too much time. Since men have to handle an infinity of situations at the same time, above all they have to calculate the movements of those around them so as to flow with them and continue to advance.

And what we all want is to please our partner of the moment. That is what it is all about. One of the greater successes of the structure that a milonga has--division into tandas--is the possibility to change and choose a new partner and to live with each one a unique experience. Besides, a recent slogan rightly said: "You dance well, you are pretty…".•
Copyright © El Tangauta 2007

Publicado en El Tangauta - EDICION nro 151
Traducción: Dolores Longo.Milena Plebshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17381522679846576469noreply@blogger.com0
