Los campeonatos tienen una estructura: participación de bailarines, rondas de pre–selección, elección de finalistas y “ganadores” y un jurado que elige. Todos, antes de decidir participar sabemos las reglas del juego. Y como en cualquier juego, se puede ganar o perder. Sólo debe funcionar para probarse en una situación de exposición, encuentro social y en lo posible, disfrute. Y si no se pasa una ronda, ¡no pasa nada! Nadie es mejor ni peor por ello. Pero pareciera que por momentos nos olvidamos del carácter lúdico. Nos enardecemos por los criterios y las diferencias. En mi caso, como jurado, siento una gran responsabilidad por tener que elegir y que estoy influyendo en el destino de las personas. Es una presión fuerte. Percibo las voluntades de los bailarines participando con tanto entusiasmo, dando lo mejor, poniendo en juego su valor y su capacidad. Entiendan, no es fácil. Por suerte, son varios los jurados, la responsabilidad está repartida. Pero ahí también viene la complicación. Mi narcisismo se ve severamente afectado cuando no es elegida mi pareja candidata. En la última competencia fui jurado de la final Tango de Salón. Para mí, este estilo es sólo caminar con elegancia. Se evalúa el baile social, ¿no? ¡Mi pareja preferida no salió elegida ni siquiera en las 10 parejas finalistas! Pero hay que aceptar que esto lo hacemos entre todos y el resultado es un promedio de las evaluaciones. Quizás, habría que optimizar la elección del jurado. Que los jurados elegidos sean verdaderos especialistas en cada categoría, sobre todo en Tango de Salón. En Tango Escenario los criterios son más amplios. No hay reglas tan estrictas como en el Salón. Celebro que en la última edición haya sido elegida una pareja, la de Colombia, que hizo un tango más cercano a la tradición. Previo a esto, la última tendencia general a las coreografías acrobáticas excedía los límites, a mi criterio. El jurado no necesariamente tiene la verdad. Por otro lado, ¿cuál es la verdad en el tango? El tango es un baile de origen popular, sin patrones fijos. Si en ballet clásico, que tiene un lenguaje establecido, es imposible decir si Baryshnikov es mejor que Nureyev, porque sus estilos y épocas son diferentes, ¡imagínense en el tango! Cómo puedo preguntarme si Finito es mejor que Virulazo o viceversa, ¡¡¡si son tan diferentes!!! ¡Si sus estilos, posturas y lenguajes son tan diversos! Pretender elegir sólo uno es empobrecer el espectro de posibilidades que ofrece este baile único que tenemos en el Río de la Plata. Lo que hay son gustos, tendencias, opiniones, todos respetables. Además, lo valioso es la gran convocatoria de público y la asistencia multitudinaria a las clases que se dan en este marco. Afortunadamente, cuando termina el campeonato, y se acallan los comentarios y las controversias, todo vuelve a la normalidad tanguera. Lo que nos enardecía a fin de agosto, no nos parece tan terrible luego. Hasta que llega mayo y comienzan las rondas previas y todo vuelve a empezar…
Pero esta vez, por favor, ¡tomémoslo como un juego! •

Tango Championships

Nobody can rate desire, vocation and the will to dance.

Championships have a structure: participation of dancers, rounds of pre-selection, election of finalists and "winning", and a jury that chooses. We all know the rules of the game before we decide to participate. And as in any game, you can win or lose. It should only be a way of testing oneself in a situation of exhibition, of social encounter and if possible, of enjoyment. And if we don’t pass one round, it does not matter! Nobody is better or worse because of it. But it seems that at times we forget that this is a game. The criteria and the differences make us angry. In my case, as a juror, I feel a great responsibility for having to choose and know that I am influencing people’s destinies. I feel a lot of pressure. I perceive the dancers’ motivation, participating with so much enthusiasm, giving their best, putting in play their value and capacity. Please understand, it is not easy. Luckily, there are several jurors, the responsibility is spread among them. But, there, also lies the complication. My narcissism is severely affected when the couple I prefer is not chosen. In the last competition I was a juror in the finals for Tango de Salón. For me, this style is just walking with elegance. It is social dancing that is being evaluated, is it not? The couple I preferred was not even in the 10 finalists! But one must accept that we all do this together and the end result is the average of the evaluations. Perhaps, the selection of the jury should be optimized. The chosen jurors should be true specialists in each category, above all in Tango de Salón. In Tango Escenario the criteria are wider. The rules are not as strict as in Salón. I celebrate that in the last edition the chosen couple, from Colombia, danced a tango that was closer to tradition. Prior to this, in my opinion, the general tendency to acrobatic choreography exceeded the acceptable limits. The jury does not necessarily own the truth. On the other hand, what is the truth in tango? Tango is a dance of popular origin, without fixed patterns. If in classical ballet, which has an established language, it is impossible to say if Baryshnikov is better than Nureyev, because their styles and their eras are different, imagine in tango! How can I ask myself if Finito is better than Virulazo or vice versa, when they are so different!!! Their styles, postures and languages are so diverse! To choose only one is to diminish the spectrum of possibilities offered by this unique dance of the Río de la Plata. What we do have are inclinations, tendencies, opinions, all deserving of respect. Besides, what is valuable is the great attendance to the events and to the classes that are given within their framework. Fortunately, when the championship ends, and the comments and controversies are silenced, all goes back to tango normality. What was inflammatory at the end of August, did not seem so terrible afterwards. Until May arrives and the first rounds begin and it starts all over again…
But this time, please, let’s treat it as a game! •
