Tango Tube

¡¡No enseñen sólo pasos...!!

Me dije “Acá pasa algo…” Estuvo buenísimo, hicimos cualquier cosa, me divertí mucho.

A veces me sale y otras no.

MANO A MANO con Chicho Frúmboli (English)

Mariano ‘Chicho’ Frumboli
Essence and teaching

M: I would like to talk to you about the contribution that dancers and teachers can make from our experience to those who are learning.
CH: Each day that we go to a milonga, do an exhibition or a show, we are writing tango history, and this is a contribution. Many young people have gotten involved with tango; we are living the beginning of a powerful era. The genre is here to stay, there is no way that it will become hidden or marginalized again. It is constantly evolving.

M: But sometimes those who are starting lose themselves in all the multiple options.
CH: They are completely lost! I learnt with the last great milongueros, I took the information directly from them. Those who are starting to dance don’t have this experience, they learn instead from an intermediate generation that I am a part of; we are a nexus between these old dancers and those who are younger. The problem is that we missed something in the teaching, I take total responsibility, and other colleagues should do so as well. I can’t pass on what I have learned. I was crazy about creating, because I saw a new vein in the evolution of the movement. I threw myself into that, and I lost the way to be able to pass on the tango essence that I have very much inside. Because of this I feel that lately there are a lot of people who don’t understand or know what the real essence of this dance is.

M: You have been dancing for fifteen years. What changes have you noticed in the dance?
CH: Before, people worked with precision and a particular aesthetic, in a functional and mechanical way that gave it a form, and a style. Making a movement or taking a step implied an expression of the entire body. Currently, not only has the essence been lost but the weight of the dance as well, its density and importance. To me, this new tango lost a bit of the respect for what tango is.

M: The knowledge that the milongueros passed on to us intuitively, the indescribable flavor in the way they moved is lost …
CH: Yes, it took me five months to get on the dance floor of the milonga of Almagro, I didn’t dare to, and I went every Sunday only to watch. One breathed an air of respect that cannot be found now. Maybe I still feel it in some milongas like Glorias Argentinas, La Baldosa or in places that are further from the circuit of younger tango. I also took that essence from you and the dancers of your generation. I feel that the people of today are not motivated, they don’t want to work or research.
They don’t want to go to the bottom of the situation; they stay on the surface. This also has to do with the new movements and dynamics that are used, if they are not performed with some power they turn out cold.

M: The internal discourse of the movement is as important as the external form.
CH: Ten years ago, when I went to milongas, I could stay watching a couple go once around the entire dance floor because there was something that attracted me, made me keep my eyes on them. Today I don’t watch for more than twenty seconds because they are all the same. You see a couple circling and the next one behind them is doing the same thing, and the rest as well. There isn’t anything that attracts me, which excites me. Except if I go to the few traditional places that are left.

M: Do you think that the people who dance automatically or repeating formulas could do it in a more internal way?
CH: This demands a lot of things! You know it, because you are a teacher as well, that currently, the available tango pedagogy is much more decoded than ten years ago and so it is easier to learn. Today you do a
volcada and a colgada and it is the same because they are there, commercially speaking, in the same package. Then, between doing a sandwichito or a volcada… people do a volcada! Because it’s more eye-catching. In tango people are self-centered, there is much individuality. They are not going to make a sandwichito to enjoy that moment, but whatever shows them more and better. In the musical field Astor Piazzolla broke with everything but you listen to it and it is tango. And today in the dance many think that they are Piazzolla and they aren’t. I see men and women that only worry about how they are seen from the outside. It is a pretty complicated situation because it has to do with a very porteño personality and identity.

M: But the milongueros from other times were also porteños!
CH: Yes, but those milongueros had respect, delicacy and sensibility, it was totally different. I know my role is contradictory, because I also collaborated in generating this young movement. In its moment I got tired of the strict milonguero codes that didn’t correspond with my time and to rebel I tried to make my way. Today I’m a milonguero again (laughter); I’m against the people who do not
cabecear (nod), who don’t have codes or respect. The value of tango has been diluted. That is why I say that many dancers are lost, they barely hold on to each other to dance and for two hours like zombies, it is very sad.

M: Sometimes I notice a competition between new currents that allow more ample movements, where the dancers use more space, and those who defend traditional tango with a closed embrace.
CH: There’s something surprising about that. There are the traditionalists who defend roots to the death and then there are those modern or alternative dancers, in other words, new tango. But if you think about it there is nothing in the middle. The traditionalists complain about the modern ones contending that they don’t dance tango, instead they do gymnastics, and the modern dancers complain that the others got stuck in time. There is no fusion, it is one group against the other, and it makes me sad because in reality we are all together.

M: Do you have any wish in relation to tango? Any pending undertaking?
CH: I’m going to tell you a story. I was into rock-and-roll; I had long hair and played the drums. I hated tango, I didn’t like it one bit, I couldn’t even listen to it. But when I went to take a class with Ricardo Barrios and Victoria Vieyra, I embraced my dance partner for the first time and I got goose bumps. I said, “there’s something going on here…” and I never stopped. That magical moment was my beginning. On the other hand, a few years ago I went to the “La Trastienda” milonga organized by Horacio Godoy. I walked in and I saw you. I wanted to dance with you but second-guessed myself. I went back and forth until I asked you. I remember we were talking, then we embraced each other and in that moment I felt 40 years of tango. In the embrace, do you understand? We hadn’t taken a single step! It was simply from the way in which you held me. For me that was the most powerful moment of the tanda. Then we danced for a long time. It was great, we did all sort of things, I enjoyed myself. But the moment of that embrace, like the one of my first class and some others, have marked me in regards to my relationship with the dance. I’m talking about the intimacy of the embrace. With very few people have I been able to feel the same way, much has been lost. My wish for the dance of tango, then, is that the shared intensity returns, in the soul. Not to stay in the surface, but to feel it inside. That the genre evolves from that intimacy. The essence of tango is in the embrace and the person you are dancing with.

M: What else can I say? Thank you!

Improvisation and Music

M: You are a great improviser and it fascinates me to see you create. Can guidelines be transmitted to improve creativity in improvised exhibition?
CH: Maybe I am a ‘kamikaze’. What provokes in me sensation or emotion makes me move. Every tango is a different and powerful moment. I have designed choreographies, not many, because after repeating them a couple times I can’t find any more risk and, when I don’t have it, everything seems too easy. What motivates me is being on the edge, on the verge of falling, and getting away with it. Improvisation has that. Every time I’m going to dance, I choose the music and the number of songs at that moment. I try to connect with Juana Sepulveda, my partner, to create and artistic moment, of transmission or expression, right there, in that moment. I do not prepare it nor do I think about it. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

M: There is no design or pre-established plan?
CH: No, I never did that. Maybe I do some steps that I experimented with in the milonga, which is my place of practice. If something doesn’t work, I don’t insist, because I might loose the connection I have with myself, with my partner and with the people. I have danced with orchestras of great prestige, in theatres all over the world, without doing choreography. Depending on the case maybe I prepare the entrance and the exit, but not the dance in itself.

M: Sometimes, when I see you dance it looks as if the structure of your dance was thought of for its harmony and musicality.
CH:: It has to do with the fact that I was a musician for many years, which is why I understand its structure, whether it is Osvaldo Pugliese, Anibal Troilo, Piazzolla or Electronic tango. The only thing I plan is a selection of tangos that I know well, to be able to play at precise moments. I try to always give what I think belongs there.

M: All of this happens on the spot? There are times when you do a sequence that has a certain duration, that has been made a certain way with a determined phrasing, where in addition to creating you are leading your partner…
CH: I know that phrase and how long it lasts, I know when it has to end and I prepare the movement along the way so that it fits perfectly with the music

M: So the value of knowing the structure of the music is important.
CH: It is crucial. Many of the professional dancers know the tangos but not in depth. There should be a stronger research of the music. I’m not talking about the rhythms, the phrasing or the duration, but the structure, the nuances and the colors. There is richness to be learned in relation to the music. It is infinite!

M: Also, what’s interesting is for the musical interpretation not to be literal. You have a style and many people follow your way to managing the music, but I see a certain lack of comprehension. It’s not about marking every little accent! (laughter) What’s marvelous about tango is the possibility of using the music in a random and personal way. How do you see the new current in relation to exhibition dancing?
CH: There are many professionals who have captured this new information and want to put it in their choreographies. But this material is not refined yet, it needs time to mature until it consolidates itself and can be used as an element of expression.

M: What one still sees are the steps instead of a fluid expression
CH: I think it is a question of giving it time. •

MANO A MANO con Julio Balmaceda

Jurado y tendencias

• – J.B. – M.P.

Jury and trends
MP: Everybody has his own interpretation about what "tango salón" is supposed to be. On the other hand, the message of the organizers and of the jury when they cast their votes is not completely clear in regards to the parameters to consider while training. It is important to emphasize that the Asociación de Maestros, Bailarines y Coreógrafos de Tango Argentino (AMBCTA) is the institution appointed by the authorities to elect the jury and write the rules the competitors must follow.

JB: In the last years I feel there was a tacit message from the juries saying "if you don't dance Villa Urquiza style, you cannot win". That's not fair! It's not possible to have everybody dancing the same way. There are many people who could have arrived to advanced stages of the championship but were eliminated for not being aligned with the Villa Urquiza style. I have talked this with Villa Urquiza milongueros and with AMBCTA people and they agreed with me.

MP: In theory, what is evaluated is the tango danced in milongas, social tango. Perhaps it is a mistake to call the category "tango salón". It is confusing and limiting. Where do you think that the problem resides?

JB: The problem is that everything is reduced to Villa Urquiza style. I'll create the Boedo style, Plebs! There is an initiative to name Villa Urquiza as tango capital. Why should Villa Urquiza be tango capital? I don't agree with that idea. There are many styles with their own nuances and riches. Besides, some members of juries are caught in the past. To be a juror it is necessary to be aware of what’s going on with tango dance around the world.

MP: Many people need models to imitate. I don't particularly agree with that because they turn into stereotypes, copies of the fashionable styles. Tango is a popular dance, everybody dances it as he wishes, provided that he complies with the essential: two people united by an embrace, one of them indicating an action, the other one reacting, both using some basic tools or steps. With those elements, each one creates his own style.

JB: The competitors should be able to participate with any style they wish. You know that during the learning process you slowly grow. You first get keen on one teacher, then on another, you start trying new ways and that's how you build your dance. People start to arrive to the dance, start to land, and taxiing along, they "dance". The truth is that today people dance with what they learn from the teachers, but also from Internet videos. This is not bad, if you know how to watch and you take what you see to recreate, to change or as a starting point for something else.

MP: Learning was always through watching. Some years ago there weren't any technique lessons, or, with a few exceptions, teachers who gave great lectures about theory. We should encourage dancers interested in developing something original to research, opening their minds and practising different styles, taking something from each one to make their own menu with those ingredients, adding their own creativity, which is what you do intuitively. In your dance it is interesting to see the strong traditional base plus all that you have studied, what you have seen and what you are experimenting with the new tendencies, making you vibrate with what happens and what happened. The idea, I think, is to make up a personal and unique synthesis. And without a name. Why is it necessary to stick a label to it?

JB: What I most value of you is that your dance kept changing. That's what is marvelous about it! You went from working with linear to working with circular dynamics and connection with the partner. The space options for a couple are few. You have the square, the triangle and the circle, which is inside the square. There are no more options in your dance area. I am referring to the geometric shapes that support the dance. Each dancer chooses a shape to support his dance.

MP: They are tools that we have to create.

JB: There are no great mysteries. The magic is in what you do with those elements. And the members of a jury should be conversant with that information.

Dancing
JB: Look, Plebs, for me the guy who dances, dances, and that's it! It is not about tango salón or any other style. To dance is to be part of the music, to listen with the body and to translate that in movement.

MP: There is something I try to transmit in the articles I write for El Tangauta: to find the natural quality of the movement, to inhabit it, to be it. To vibrate with one’s spirit, completely surrendering from the guts and not so much from the mind. Also, to avoid postures.

JB: In the dictionary the word "posture" means something unnatural.

MP: Of course! You looked it up in the dictionary! (Laughter)

JB: I like a lot this idea of the championship; I think it is very important.

MP: It's the first time media pay a bit more of attention to tango and the important point is that it draws new people to it.

We all love this dance and we want it to live on keeping its essence. Together we can help to its dissemination, preservation and necessary evolution.

Our suggestions

• Members of a jury must be impartial and not allow their egos to intrude while evaluating. A juror must have a neutral attitude when evaluating, appreciating good dancing and its evolution, irrespective of the style
• Dance juror should have wide knowledge about how the movement is, be able to discern if the couple dances with the music, if it moves correctly through the dance floor, if it is harmonious, etc.
• To try to have all "tango salón" styles represented in the jury.
• To exercise more care in order to select a committed jury
• To have substitute jurors who follow the competition to call in the event of absences.
• It would be positive for the members of the jury to be able to discuss among themselves just before they vote. • – J.B. – M.P.

See english translation below

Dance of words

I have heard it said several times that verbal expression is not easy for us dancers, since we express ourselves through our bodies. I believe of great importance to realize that we can also transmit the theoretical concepts of the dance, the customs and codes of behavior in the dance floor, its history, etc. .

Our way of "saying" is through movement. But in our formation and through our dancing we intuitively use a complex analytic mechanism to translate ideas into movements. The issue is that it is not a habit to put in words how and why steps and sequences work. It is true that upon focusing great part of the attention in resolving situations through motor skills, it is normal not to use verbal expression in equal amounts.

Tango is different from other dances. Its mechanics require intellectual work. In tango it is necessary to develop the analysis of the movement, since it is indispensable to use it in improvisation, a situation where a complex association of characteristics function simultaneously.

It can be positive for the protagonists of this tango boom to increase the explanations on what surrounds the dance itself. It is valuable when in classes the teachers transmit also the theory side of it, as it relates to the operation of social dancing if the lesson is on this subject, or to expressive aspects if the lesson is about exhibition dance. Also, the contributions that choreographers and researchers can make through texts about the ideas that support their work are of great importance for the evolution of this art of popular origin.

I consider very necessary to leave written documents and footage for future generations. The documents on the dance of tango during its first burgeoning era, in the decades of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, are minimal and do not reflect the true significance of this social movement at the time. At present the audiovisual recording is guaranteed thanks to the proliferation of video. Today it is very easy to film the dance and to disseminate it through Internet since it allows people to access what is happening with tango everywhere.

In recent years, in this rebirthing of tango various books have been published that contribute very interesting data. For example, Quién me quita lo bailado (Who can take away what I have danced) written by Juan Carlos Copes and the two volumes titled El tango, una danza by Rodolfo Dinzel, among many others. Also numerous novels about tango and the milonga have appeared in Argentina and in other countries.

Though viewing the movement is the most attractive aspect of the registration of the dance, collecting videos is not enough to show the things that emerge in each period. Writing or words transmit what the image is not able to and are definitively fundamental additions at the time of recording history.

Torsion & pivot.

An opposition of hip and shoulders produces the change of direction while dancing tango, with the backbone as axis and the vertex in the waist. As a consequence a rotation normally called pivot is generated in the base foot, where the weight is supported by the metatarsus. This combined mechanism is functional both to the male lead and the female answer, in different ways depending on the role.

Great part of the ability in tango centers in the fluid management of this instance and its infinite applications. We can say that the two essential elements of this partner dance are the walk and the changes of direction, caused by the mechanics of the embrace or link. The "ocho", a basic figure in tango, is formed by a step or change of weight and a pivot. This last one is particularly interesting, since it is the key to open the multiple possibilities of the dance. From controlling it depends many times the quality of the performance both on the dance floor and the stage. The pivot of the foot is the concrete consequence of the torsion of the middle part of the body.

I usually say in my classes that it would be convenient to have this mechanism well “oiled” with everything that this implies: good performance of both the proposal and the answer of the dancers through the embrace, the couple’s axis and the way their bodies are joined, and the capacity to measure the rotation of the spiral that this motion system produces on each impulse given or received.

In the role of the woman, it is interesting to explore the state of the body during the torsion and the pivot. This is the situation during which changes happen and they can be truly unexpected. This is why it is advisable to work on and experience maximum physical alertness, the capacity to quickly answer and at the same time to allow for a certain relaxation that favors being receptive to what may happen. To achieve this is useful to have dynamic tools such as the work of tension and complementary relaxation, balance and a good understanding of the dance encounter. As for the man side, the management of the torsion has to do with a voluntary action, that is to say with its control, and it is also valuable to study it. This allows for a wider creative range in the dance and increases its harmony.

But with this development I do not mean to generate a more pronounced pivot than it is necessary. It is only a matter of investigating it, as it relates to the whole of the dance, its nuances and possibilities in the corresponding position: that of stimulus and consequent transformation of those involved in the dance.

Quality control.

The success of the dancing of tango in the world increases day by day. Many people who dance see teaching as a good way of making a living. The problem is that many times they are not qualified to do it. And beginner students not always can tell how suitable are the teachers they choose.

Since tango is a popular dance, there is not way of exercising quality control of the pedagogical aptitudes of the teachers. In the academic environment for the arts or any another category, competence is determined through exams and the issuance of certificates or ratings. How does one determine in tango if what a person communicates is valuable and is correctly transmitted? There are several projects that aim to the systematization of the communication of the dance in order to, among others things, regulate the quality of the instructors. Personally, I don’t agree with having a unified code of teaching. I do not believe it is appropriate to have only one set of regulations of steps and sequences. I think that this would kill creativity. If we all did the salida, the ochos, etc, in the same way with the purpose of defending the consumers, the dance would turn monotonous and boring. What we can recognize, in the great many people who have danced tango since its beginnings, are their tendencies or styles. From the primitive tango canyengue, through all the known varieties: tango salón, with sequences and fantasy, and those which have become fashionable recently: milonguero, villa urquiza, and tango nuevo, among others. An alternative to implement some type of teaching certification, could be to create a regulating entity with representatives of each one of the tendencies, and that each area dealt with the quality of its corresponding style. At the same time all would be interconnected, and they would consult with each other in a dynamic and flexible way, since the boundaries between the different styles may intersect. Given the immensity of the field of the dance of tango at a global level the challenge would be to create a solid and efficient structure that functioned internationally. If improving the quality of the teachers were a common concern among those of us who have roles of responsibility in the genre, it would be good to get together to discuss and propose ways to preserve the quality level of this expression that we love so much and that gives us so many satisfactions.

See english translation below

Technique for all!

When improving the level of dance in tango, technique classes can help to know and handle the body, its movement, one’s own muscular coordination and the connection with the partner better.

These lessons are oriented specifically to improve the physical aptitude to dance. In the mythical golden era of the genre this type of training, that abounds so much in our days, did not exist. The transmission of the dance happened between people, to a large extent spontaneously, from generation to generation. During the recent come back of tango dancing, the teachers began to propose resources to expedite the incorporation of know-how, such as technique classes, as a practice complementary to regular courses. There, sequences are broken into small cells to delve in the synthetic mechanisms of the movement. This modality is appropriate for couples as well as for individual work. In this last case classes of technique for women have proliferated extensively, while those for men much less so. For some reason, the ladies show a lot more interest in improving their dexterity and in these practices they have the opportunity of learning without depending on the man. I believe it is good to work on female autonomy to improve the way we adapt to the diverse styles of tango that different men may propose. Through it, by gaining greater control of my movements, axis and muscles, I acquire more independence which allows me, although it may seem contradictory, to give myself to the situation, responding to the man’s proposal with greater ease. But the male role in the dance of tango is the most complex one. He has to decide many issues simultaneously: creation of the sequences, spatial development, interpretation of the music, relaying all these to the woman through the embrace and, if we speak of the social dance, the relationship with the couples around him. Perhaps it would also be advisable for them to have individual training to expand their physical capacities in the responsibility of leading. But let’s not forget that it takes two for this dance. All the know-how incorporated is valid as long as it is applied to the connection with the partner. And most important of all: to dancing!!!, which is a lot more than "moving together".
